Filtration of coatings is needed to ensure that no foreign particles or large agglomerates from the coating are applied to the surface to be coated. This applies to products we are familiar with, such as printing plates, medical films (X-ray), screens, optical lenses, and automotive coatings.
Foreign particles or agglomerates in coatings result in defects, such as spots on a lens or inclusions in car paint, which can lead to rework or in the worst-case complete rejection of the product.
Air bubbles cause defects too, because where there was an air bubble, no coating was applied on the substrate (film, foil, car body,…). Performant special filters in combination with a good filtration process maximizes productivity and ensures that specifications are met and defects reduced or eliminated.

Car paint
To ensure that manufacturers can deliver a car without visible or functional defects in the paintwork, the four layers of automotive paint are filtered.
Clear coat, base coat, filler, and dip coating; with a layer thickness between 12 µm and 30 µm per layer.
Since paints contain functional components such as pigments in the base coat, it is crucial to filter these paints in such a way that the color tone remains stable while at the same time filtering out the disruptive particles.
In clear coats, on the other hand, all particles and gels must be removed.
