Anode and cathode slurry filtration


Filtering slurries anode or cathode (NMC, LFP) -which are coated on Al or Cu foils to produce battery cells- is the determining process step that will define the properties and performance of the finished battery.

It is a challenging task because the binders and pigments exhibit very different filtration behavior. Removing gel particles from binders requires different filter properties than removing pigment agglomerates from the slurry.

A filter with excellent classification properties is a requirement to separate agglomerates from the good pigment particles. If a filter does not have these classifying properties, too many functional pigments are removed. This shortens the service life of the filter, making frequent filter changes necessary.

The process design (pumps, piping, filter housings, process monitoring) also has a major influence on the filtration behavior. Often, these are not optimized for thixotropic liquids, with all the consequences that this entails. This applies to both the anode and cathode coating process.
